Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

Jodan Price (Birmingham DCD) - This long and soft-stroking forward will be going for 20 a night next year, u watch

Jonathon "Jon Jon" Williams (Southfield-Lathrup) - Will be a junior next year and could easily end up leading the OC in scoring

Bench Play

There are lots of assistant coaches on the bench this prep boys basketball season with quite accomplished on-court resumes themselves
Let's take a look at a few:
Burney's All-Assistant Coach Team
My Starters
Lindsey Hunter (Southfield Christian) – Former NBA First Round draft pick and 13-year league vet....oh, yeah,  2-time WORLD CHAMP as well!!
Clennie Brundidge (Southfield) – Played for Coach K at Army in the 1970s as a hard-nosed 2-guard
Jimmy King (OL St. Mary's) – FAB FIVE…enough said!!!!
Mychel Covington/Nucleus Smith (Pontiac) – Covington, the former wing defensive specialist who is doing Coach Kampe and the Oakland Grizz proud on the bench as head coach-in-training for the Phoenix and Smith, who took Pontiac Northern on his back into a Class A Final Four as a senior 11 years ago, give me that 'Yacktown toughness
Paris McCurdy (Southfield) – All-Conference big fella in the MAC at Ball State back in the late 80s and early 90s…Took Cardinals into the NCAA Sweet 16 in 1990 before losing a two-point heartbreaker to eventual National Champ, UNLV.
My Bench
Brandon Edwards (Southfield-Lathrup) – Edwards was fairly good as a college baller at Fairleigh Dickinson a decade or so ago after starring as a Charger in the late 90s.
Todd Negoshian (North Farmington) – This gritty little sparkplug of a point guard led Oakland County in scoring as a senior at Walled Lake Central in 1998.
Herb Goliday (Ferndale) – Could really fill'em up as an Eagles all-stater back in the day
Jason Webber (Birmingham DCD) – Would give me solid "grunt minutes" off the pine in the post…you can't replicate the kind of state championship experience ('95 'Jackets title) a guy like Webber would bring into the fold

The Bluejays are peaking at the exact right time. Their experience factor will give them the edge over East Detroit on Tuesday at THE HALL! A little OC math; Southfield's BIG 3 (Brundidge, Barnes, and Onwenu) = NO. 2 FINAL FOUR for 'Jays…..this time Burney smells a state title!!!
Southfield 56, East Detroit 50
Class A
Orchard Lake St. Mary's v. Bay City Western (at Davison)
Two Words; ALLEN ROBINSON….The Eaglets have AL B SURE and Western doesn't. That's the difference and OLSM keeps dancing!!!

A Little OC Hoop History

Some interesting historical Oakland County prep basketball tidbits
Two county hoopsters have taken home MAC MVP honors over the last 20 years
-          Marcus Kennedy (Troy), 1991, Eastern Michigan
-          David Webber (DCD), 2002, Central Michigan
Speaking of former OC cage greats, Bryan Smothers (Pontiac Northern) and Mike Fugate (Lakeland), are both super floor generals doing a magnificent job leading their respective college teams from the point guard spot. Fugate finished the year third on his team in scoring (13 ppg) and first in assists (4 apg)
Southfield's Carlton Brundidge once scored 21 points in a single quarter back as a sophomore against Southfield-Lathrup – CB's gaudy point total is seventh all time in state history
In 1947, a prep hoop stud from Pontiac and long defunct St. Fredericks named Bob McManus dropped in 61 points in a regular season game
50 years later in 1997, Lathrup's Greg Grays (Penn State/UofD) went for 60
Clarkston's Dane Fife (Indiana), who played for his dad from 1994-1998 before going on to lead the 2002 Hoosiers to an NCAA Final Four, is the 10th all-time leading prep scorer in the history of the state of Michigan. Fife tickled the twine for a total of 2, 287 as him and his dad captured four straight Class A regional championships. The younger Fife is currently a head coach in college at IUPUI-FW
Oakland Christian's Jon Mills shot 50 percent from 3-point range as a three-year varsity performer for the Lancers back in the 1990s. He knocked down 103 of 206 from downtown between 1995 and 1997, good for third all-time in state history.
Southfield Christian's Billy Boldt once hit 12 trifectas in a single game back in 1991, checking in at No. 3 on the state's all-time list.

The Great Burnzini Returns - Regional Roundup

Picks for this week's prep boys basketball regionals
Class A
Southfield Regional
Teams: Southfield, Brother Rice, RH Adams, Pontiac
Pick: Southfield
Burney thinks the host-Bluejays have smoothed out their mid-season wrinkles and are on the prowl back to the Breslin Center for a second straight year….U CAN'T STOP the Bluejays BIG 3 of BRUNDIDGE, BARNES and ONWENU, U CAN ONLY HOPE TO CONTAIN THEM….and that's a FACT!
*SUPERSONIC UPSET SPECIAL in the semis….ADAMS goes all JUWAN HOWARD and SHOCKS THE WORLD by nipping favored Pontiac in the closing seconds
AA Pioneer Regional
Teams: OL St. Mary's, Hartland, AA Huron, Novi Detroit CC
Pick: AA Huron
Just too much firepower on this Huron team for county cage crews, St. Mary's and CC, to overcome
Bay City Western Regional
Teams: Clarkston, Flint Northwestern, Saginaw, Bay City Western
Pick: Saginaw
If this was next year, I'd be picking C-Town all the way, but this year the Sag NASTY is well, too NASTY to pick against. That said, another SWEET 16 for Coach Fife and the Wolfpack is a major accomplishment.
Class B
Imlay City Regional
Teams: Birmingham DCD, Pontiac Notre Dame Prep, Marysville, Osborn
Pick: Birmingham DCD
ALL HAIL THE DEFENDING, SOON-2-B REPEAT CHAMPS!!!
Class C
MH Bishop Foley Regional
Teams: MH Bishop Foley, Detroit Consortium, Detroit Allen, Melvindale ABT
Pick: This is a bear of a draw for the host-Ventures of Bishop Foley and Burney can't see them making it to the Elite 8 alas the baseball squad last spring
Class D
Birmingham Roeper Regional
Teams: Birmingham Roeper, AH Oakland Christian, Detroit Westside Christian, SH Parkway Christian
Pick: SUPERSONIC UPSET SPECIAL: Roeper's Duriajaiye Lewis will be the best player on the court this week and lead the underdog 'Riders into their first quarterfinal ever after finishing the regular season below the .500 mark (for only the second time in coach Ernie Righetti's 27-year regime). Getting hot at the right time is everything come tourney time

Instant Feedback - Finals Friday

Some thoughts from District final Friday on the prep boys basketball scene
My main man, Drew Holinski was on his game B.J. Armstrong-style for the Brother Rice Warriors, dropping a 16-point, five-dime, five-board performance in a win against Southfield-Lathrup and leading TEAM WAHOO to its second consecutive district title
After turning in only the second losing season of his 27-year career on the bench, Birmingham Roeper head coach Ernie Righetti went all JOHN WOODEN and painted a silver lining on the disappointing campaign by corralling his 9th career district championship when his team pulled the upset over Detroit City. This is the first time Righetti has beaten City, a squad that has traditionally proved a thorn in his side in the state tournament, bumping the Roughriders off in the post-season on three previous occasions.
Speaking of great coaching jobs, Robert Rogers (Pontiac), John Hall (RH Adams), George Porritt (OL St. Mary's), Dennis Hopkins (AH Oakland Christian), Kurt Keener (Birmingham DCD) and Dan Fife (Clarkston) all brought home some more hardware and raised another district title banner for their respective schools Friday night. For Hopkins this is four in a row, for Fife it's an eye-popping 18th straight!!!!! Way to go fellas!!!!
Kellen, Joey, Danny, Ross, Troy and the rest of the NDP cage crew, CAN U SAY 3-PEAT?
The GRIDIRON GANG was out in force for the Novi Detroit CC Shamrocks in their 43-38 defeat of Canton in a Class A district final, making it possible for head coach Bill Dyer to claim stake to his third district crown in the past four years. Buffalo-bound defensive lineman Brandon Tammaro, the 'Rocks second-year starting center, collected a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds and drilled six consecutive free throw in the game's final 50 seconds to wrap up the victory. Junior Matt Doneth, the team's third-year starting power forward, who is also a Division I football prospect at the tight end position, was his usual nails-tough self in the paint, scoring 11 points and snagging nine boards.

Menace To Society

ROEPER STAR SHINES BRIGHT IN 'RIDERS STATE TOURNEY TRIUMPH

Duriajaiye Lewis was an outright menace on the basketball court Wednesday night. Birmingham Roeper's 6-foot-2 senior point guard was brilliant in his team's district semi-final match-up with Southfield Christian, scoring a game-high 21 points, while snaring a school-record nine steals to go along with six assists and five rebounds in leading the Roughriders to a 44-31 victory in front of their home crowd.

"When he's playing his best, he's very tough to guard," said longtime Roeper head coach Ernie Righetti of his squad's leading scorer. "He took over the game tonight."
Lewis, a transfer from University of Detroit-Jesuit, scored 15 of his 21 points in the second half and ignited a rally that the Roughriders used to put the game away. His nine straight points out of the locker room to open the third quarter - capped by a beautiful twisting reverse lay-up - vaulted Roeper into a lead it never gave up.
"I do whatever it takes to win," said Lewis following his excellent outing. "A game like this just makes me hungry for more. In that second half we showed what kind of team we can be."
Extending its overall record to 7-15, Roeper, which had an unusually down regular season campaign this year, advances into Friday's Class D district championship game against Detroit City riding a three-game win-streak. In close to three full decades on the sidelines coaching the Roughriders, 2011 is only the second time a Righetti-led team has finished the regular season below the .500 mark. He's been head coach at Roeper since 1983, accumulating a combined eight district titles and 11 conference crowns. Last year, Righetti's 'Riders racked up a rotund 23-2 overall record and made an appearance in the program's fifth Sweet Sixteen.
Since becoming eligible in January, Lewis has been averaging 16 points per game. Righetti thinks it took some time for everyone on the team to get on the same page with their new floor general.
"These guys have only been playing together for like 12 games, so it's been a gradual process that's just now starting to bear some fruit," he said. "Hopefully, we find a way to keep playing into next week. We can still improve and get better."
Besides Lewis' impressive exploits, Righetti got  a pair of solid performances from his starting frontcourt. Junior center Jack Gorland, the Roughrider's second-leading scorer, and sophomore Garrett House, the team's lanky power forward, put up six points and grabbed six rebounds apiece as well as effecting numerous Eagles shots in the lane with their long arms. Reserve forward Sam Hess came off the bench and injected the Roeper attack with some added energy, scoring five points and corralling four boards.
Southfield Christian was hot out of the gate, but couldn't sustain its level of stellar play throughout the entirety of the contest. Holding a 10-2 lead after the first quarter and a 16-14 lead at the break, the Eagles shot 52 percent from the field in the first half, compared to a frosty 26 percent in the second. Headlining Southfield Christian in the scorebook was junior guard Lindsay Hunter III, who rattled off a team-high 17 points.
A pair of free throws by Hunter III got the Eagles deficit down to 12 points at 35-23 with 6:05 left. But it was Lewis to the rescue once again. First, he drove the lane on the ensuing possession and found House for a lay-up. Then, he followed that up by draining four straight from the charity stripe to officially quell the potential rally and allow for Roeper to empty its bench.
Despite Wednesday's loss, the Eagles made significant strides this year. After ending last season with only two wins total, Southfield Christian closes down 2011 with a final record of 12-9, a vast improvement under second-year head coach Alonso Littlejohn. Next year, the Eagles will gain the services of transfer Chris Dewberry, a high-scoring guard from Waterford Mott who enrolled at Southfield Christian back in late January.

Five For Fighting - The Jumpoff

OC Top 5 – Performances on the opening night of the boys basketball state tournament
1 James Young (Troy) – "The Chosen One" lived up to his nickname in the first state tournament game of his career, dropping in 35 points and grabbing eight rebounds in the Colts thrashing of crosstown foe Troy Athens
2 Patrick Onwenu & Landon Atterberry (Southfield) – The Bluejays frontcourt played OUT OF THEIR MINDS on Monday, each posting monster-sized double-doubles in Southfield's 77-73 defeat of an able-bodied and upset-minded Detroit Henry Ford squad. Owenu had 27 points and 18 rebounds, while Atterberry put up 19 points and 17 collected boards in the Bluejays high-octane triumph.
3 Martell Porter (Royal Oak) – This Ravens jumping jack had 20 points and 16 rebounds in Royal Oak's take down of Bloomfield Hills Andover.
4 Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood – Head coach Shane Finney's team did a super job pulling the upset over a stacked Madison Heights Madison squad. MAD PROPS to Alex David for knocking down a game-tying trey ball to take the game into OT and to Sterling Morrow who had a STERLING outing of 27 points, five rebounds and four assists.
5 Andrew Hammett (Rochester Adams) – "The Hammer Time's" 19 point, nine rebound output propelled the Highlanders to an OT win over Oxford. What a great job Hammett and head coach John Hall have done this year, these guys could be the HARDEST WORKING bunch of hoop grinders in the area!!!!
BONUS SHOUT OUT to my boys at North Farmington (AKA TEAM NOGO) for springing the upset against West Bloomfield on Monday....First-rate performances from senior Urbane Bingam (20 points, 11 rebounds) and sophomore Sterling Sharp (12 points, 4 of 6 from 3-point range).

On The Move

Christian Pino will be playing his senior season on the prep hardwood in his traditional maroon uniform next year. However, unlike the past two seasons, Pino's jersey won't read Seaholm across the chest. In the most recent of a rash of county transfers, Pino, one of the area's top point guards the last two years, has left Birmingham Seaholm and has enrolled at Romulus. According to Pino, he will be eligible to play in his new Maroon-colored Eagles digs at the start of the next season since his father recently moved his residence to within the Romulus school district.

This is the talented floor general's second transfer of his high school playing career. When he was a freshman, he played on the varsity at Bloomfield Hills Andover. Coming over to Seaholm as a sophomore in 2009, he helped spearhead a Maples squad that brought home an OAA conference title. Despite Seaholm as a team having a down campaign this season, Pino himself had a productive year in the stat sheet. Through 16 games (he missed two with injury and two via his transfer to Romulus), Pino averaged 16.5 points and five assists per game.

While Seaholm might have been one of the best hoop squads in the county in 2009 and 2010, winning back-to-back OAA crowns, Romulus is at a completely different level. The Eagles have been a perennial state juggernaut the last five years, appearing in four final fours since 2006. Currently, Romulus is the No.1 ranked team in Michigan.

Joining Pino as a recent transfer to Romulus is Leo Edwards, a rangy and potentially explosive 6-8 sophomore forward from Detroit Cass Tech. Next winter, Pino's point guard talents will blend nicely with the assorted offensive arsenal of his future backcourt mate Ray Lee, the Eagles main perimeter threat and a top college recruit in the Class of 2012.

Second Half Studs

Here's a list of prep boys basketball players that are all having a great second half to the season
William Bradley (MH Madison) – This junior point guard has really come into his own lately, developing into one of the county's better floor generals
Marcus Hardy (Clarkston) – His recent performance down low for Coach Fife and the C-Town ballers could be the difference between a district title and a regional title
Joshua Brown (Southfield) – This athletic and ultra-active Bluejays swingman is very, very unheralded, but VERY, VERY good
Davonte Daniel (Waterford Mott)-PURE HEART and DESIRE anchor this Sir Grind-a-lot's game

Dylan Bowman (Hazel Park)
– Major reason why the Vikings are finishing the season STRONG AS EVER
Brandon Yousif (Birmingham Seaholm) – For Maple hoop fans, this SUPER SOPH is the FUTURE
De Andre Jackson (MH Bishop Foley) – Another super soph that is showing signs of future greatness
Royaire Churchill (Pontiac) – Very pleasant surprise for the Yactown Purple People Eaters. His heady play on both ends of the floor has helped fill the void after the transfer of all-conference stud Juwaan Moody (moved to AZ w/family)
WARNING=DIAPER DANDY ALERT!!!!!!
D.J. Stevens (AH Oakland Christian) – Quickly emerging as one of the area's top freshman phenoms
Armand Cartwright (BH Lahser) – Quickly emerging as one of the STATE's top freshman phenoms
Jared Wangler (RO Shrine) – This sharpshooting youngster is only a ninth-grader but I'd put his stroke from downtown up against the best Oakland County has to offer…Superb genes too!

Tourney Roll Call

Here is a list of prep basketball players that Burney expects big performances from in the state tournament:
Nick Tatu (Clarkston) – This kid is getting better and more dangerous every game - no longer simply an expert marksman.  He's starting to remind me of former Wolfpack star Brandon Pokely (Western Michigan) w/ a better move to the hoop.
Rob Laney (Novi) – Injuries over the last few seasons have limited this multi-dimensional dynamo's exposure, but he's back W/ a VENGANCE, healthy and playing some SUPER FRESH basketball! Laney's presence in the Wildcats lineup will spell repeat district championship for head coach Corey Heitsch, Samer "The Big Sham Wow" Ozeir, Chris "The Million Dollar Man" Milon and company next week!
Courtney Williams (AH Avondale) – This mega-talented hoopstress is balling at one of the highest clips in the area….& U CAN TAKE THAT 2 THE BANK!
Chris Fowler (Birmingham DCD) – In my opinion, there's no better point guard in the county right now!
Lexie Robak & Carlee Cottrell (Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes) – The trey-balls will be flying and SWOOSHING for this pair of ace Lady Laker snipers….I predict more than 30 trifectas between these two over the next few weeks as well as REPEAT state crown (come on Blu Cru, let's go get my homegirl, Carlee aka "Nothing But Net" Cottrell, her first RING!)
Max Aleshire (MH Bishop Foley) – The best outside shooter and human SPARK PLUG nobody knows about……YET
