Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

Five For Fighting - Friday's Star Search

Five For Fighting – The brightest stars from the OC prep gridiron on Friday night
1 WL Northern Defense – After giving up an average of 50 points a night coming into Week 4, the Knights 'D' proved all the pundits wrong, doing their best Baltimore Ravens impression, locking down WL Western's explosive offense in a 17-10 win. MAD PROPS all around!!!!
2 Johnny Williams (Holly) – The Flint Metro's Mr. Do Everything was at it again on Friday in the Bronchos 49-13 beat down of Clio, finding the end zone via pass (touchdown connections with Evan Pupaga and Kyle McCarty), run (50-yard and 72- yard touchdown scrambles) and special teams (85-yard kickoff return for TD to open the game and a 60-yard punt return for a TD). Can you say get this kid some THERAFLU 'cause he's CRAZY SICK!!!
3 Connor Mohr (Farmington) – The picture of nails-tough on Friday in the Falcons 19-13 overtime downing of Oxford on both sides of the ball, rushing in a trio of touchdowns – including the game-winning score in the extra session – as well as posting over a dozen tackles and a couple of sacks from his spot at middle linebacker.  Just so good in so many ways!!!
4 Ross Williams (Birmingham Groves) – This Groves MEGA BURNER ran for 235 yards and three scores in his team's 38-33 defeat at the hands of Hazel Park. Will probably end up being the school's all-time rusher before this speedy sophomore playmaker graduates….YEAH, I SAID IT!!!
5 (tie) Cam Thomas (SL East) – The newly-anointed OC GUNSLINGER showed his prowess passing the pigskin, hitting Wade Morris for a game-winning touchdown in overtime of the Cougars' climatic 26-23 road triumph over Novi, the pair's second scoring hook-up of the evening. Western Michigan is getting itself a GRADE-A GAMER, that's for sure!!!
5 (tie) Clarence Broadnax (RH Adams) – Emerging from the shadows, Broadnax busted loose for 170 yards and three touchdowns on the ground in the Highlanders' do-or-die 28-7 besting of Southfield-Lathrup on Friday.  Broadnax brought the AX against the Chargers defense and chopped them down like a GRIDIRON PAUL BUNYAN, expect more SOON!!
