Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

No Small Feat

There have been plenty of strong performances from the area's small-school quarterbacks so far on the local prep football field this fall;
Let's take a look at some of the best:
Nate Drews (Rochester Hills Lutheran NW) – The Crusaders' most prolific quarterback ever who will be playing basketball in college……throws a beautiful ball and has that PRIMETIME SWAGGER that all the true greats at the position embody in both sports. After opening the season with a tough loss to Warren Michigan Collegiate, where NW could only manage 13 points, Drews and the Crusaders offense have roared back with ground-shaking efficiency, putting up 83 points over the past two weeks, in a pair of commanding wins for TEAM JUSTICE
Connor Francek (Royal Oak Shrine) – One of the steadiest signal callers around, regardless of school size…..the definition of a gamer, leader, playmaker, etc…Behind Francek's heroics, Shrine is 3-0, averaging close to 40 points per outing
Nate Grys (Madison Heights Bishop Foley) – A rising star under center for the Ventures already in his second year as the team's starting field general as only a sophomore……won a state title on the baseball diamond last spring, too! Grys and the Ventures (2-1) are coming off a resounding 41-6 demolishing of Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook in Week 3 and are also averaging roughly 40 points a night
Sal Mastromatteo (Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes) – A rising star under center for the Lakers, already in his second year as the starting field general as only a sophomore……this kid is improving as fast as any quarterback in the OC! Mastromatteo played the role of gunslinger in Week 3, taking his team to a 56-41 shoot-out win over Riverview Gabriel Richard to improve to a perfect 3-0 heading into its Week 4 grudge match against rival Shrine
