Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

Five For Fighting - Getting Down & Dirty

FIVE FOR FIGHTING – Top outings on the hardwood from the Birmingham Brother Rice hoop squad in its 60-59 OT upset of Orchard Lake St. Mary's Sunday………and there were a lot of them, believe me!!
1 Patrick Sparks – The senior captain and savvy vet played like just that, busting loose for a team-high 16 points and just giving the Orange Crush that little edge with his on-court leadership it needed to get the DUB…The FireCracker goes BOOM again!!!
2 Delano Madison – The fearless and lightning fast Warriors junior floor general was as rock-solid as you could ask for from a guy making his first start. Madison hit the game-winning free throws with 35 seconds left and registered eight points, five assists and four steals in a gritty performance that was nothing but heart
3 Dominic Downs – The definition of a "gutty gamer" and "primetime playmaker"….this nails-tough junior off-guard has hit numerous clutch shots in his time in a Rice uniform and Sunday brought more, with DSQUARED dialing long-distance to tie things up and send it into its extra frame
4 Drew Gallagher – Who does this kid think he is STEPH CURRY?.....Gallagher was a one-man wrecking crew off the bench, drilling some critical 3s, connecting on a big-time lay-up  and snatching a pair of key steals down the stretch
5 Kevin Hayes – Long, lean and mean, Hayes notched 12 points and grabbed 5 points, not to mention came up with a stifling defensive effort on the final possession of the game, shadow-locking St. Mary's superstar Teddy McCree and not allowing him to even touch the rock. In that five seconds, it was liking watching SCOTTIE PIPPEN…….YEAH I SAID IT!!!
